How We Domesticated Cats (Twice)

  • A 9,500 year old burial in Cyprus represents some of the oldest known evidence of human/cat companionships anywhere in the world. But when did this close relationship between humans and cats start? And how did humans help cats take over the world?

Big thanks to these paleoartists for allowing us to use their wonderful illustrations:
Julio Lacerda (who illustrated the Cyprus grave site):
Ceri Thomas (who illustrated Felis silvestris lybica):

My theory: Cats taught ancient man how to distill grains and produce alcohol. They offered "Protection Services" to insure the grains were protected.

I love how cats sort of domesticated themselves by filling the much needed role of pest control

I don't think this is true, cats were the ones who taught humans to care for them and they are our owners and overlords.

No geological references? More than likely the cats were already on Cyprus when the Mediterranean was flooded.

I grew up as a child in central Birmingham, England. Either you livedwith cats or you lived with mice. No middle way.

Domesticated cats? My cats are still savage when they want to. They've been living here since 2014. More like mutual agreement or the cat adopts you.
